Emerging Museum Professionals Get Connected
The Emerging Museum Professional (EMP) group at AAM has created a new list-serv, AAM-EMP, on Google Groups. The discussion group is open to those who identify themselves as emerging professionals—those within the first ten years of their careers—as well as those who work for or with museums or who are considering pursuing a career in the museum field.
The list-serv has been created partly in response to feedback received on the Emerging Museum Professionals Survey. Many respondents asked for increased access to information sharing and networking with their peers. Through this discussion group, the EMP group hopes to create a forum for sharing news and events (both professional development and fun, museum-related activities) as well as tips and tricks of the trade. It is an opportunity to engage in dialogue about some of the most pressing issues facing this demographic today, including:
- Finding and affording professional development
- Identifying a mentor or a mentee
- Creating a healthy work/life balance
- Advocating for leadership development within your museum (succession planning)
- Leveraging for a raise versus going independent/for-profit
- Other work-related issues
