U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) is once again circulating a "Dear Colleague" letter to increase funding for the Office of Museum Services (OMS) at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). As announced earlier this month, the letter asks the Senate Appropriations Committee to support $50 million for the Office of Museum Services in FY12.

"The current budget climate requires us to redouble our efforts to make a compelling case for museums," said AAM President Ford W. Bell. "Senators need to hear from their constituents. Lots of them."

AAM makes it easy to contact Congress. With just a few clicks, you can ask your U.S. Senators to sign the letter today. "We currently have just 5% of U.S. Senators signing the letter, and that's simply not enough," said Bell . "I call on my colleagues throughout the museum field to join this important effort."

The final FY11 funding bill signed into law on April 15, 2011 included a 10.7% reduction in IMLS funding from FY10, and just $31.583 million for OMS for the current fiscal year that ends September 30, 2011. Thanks to advocates around the country a record-breaking 59 members of Congress signed the Tonko/Slaughter/Lance letter circulated in the House earlier this year.
