Advocacy Alert: Nov. 25
200 Advocates from 140 Nonprofit Organizations Make Unified Case to Capitol Hill; Now Do Your Part and Ask Your Senators to Sign the Wyden/Thune Letter
On Wednesday, November 20, several American Alliance of Museums members joined advocates from the American Red Cross, Feeding America, Catholic Charities, universities, foundations, orchestras and numerous others to make the case that any changes to the deductibility of charitable gifts will have a direct impact on the services these organizations are able to provide.
“It was exhilarating to join our colleagues from the broad nonprofit sector in making the case that the charitable deduction is not a tax loophole, but a lifeline,” said Alliance President Ford W. Bell. “With one-third of museum operating budgets coming from charitable gifts, we must continue this drumbeat. Congress needs to know that any limitation in the deductibility of charitable gifts would almost certainly cut into the $1.5 billion museums spend every year on K-12 educational programs.”
A letter is currently being circulated in Congress by Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and John Thune (R-SD) urging the Senate Finance Committee to protect the full value and scope of the charitable deduction during any comprehensive rewrite of the tax code. This is your Senators’ opportunity to go on record in support of the charitable deduction.
Here’s how you can help:
- Call your U.S. Senators and ask them to “Please sign the Wyden/Thune letter to protect the charitable tax deduction.” (You can reach the Senate switchboard at 202.224.3121.)
- Activate your networks over social media. Let your followers know they can help by contacting their Senators, watch Facebook and Twitter for ongoing updates, and visit the Protect Giving Online Outreach Guide for additional tips and ideas.
P.S. Please consider joining us on February 24-25 for Museums Advocacy Day 2014, another great opportunity to make the case for museums. Register, book your hotel, pledge your support, or learn more.
