U.S. Senate Confirms Jane Chu to Lead NEA; Nomination of William “Bro” Adams Still Pending

JUNE 12, 2014–Today, the U.S. Senate confirmed Dr. Jane Chu to serve as the 11th Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. Dr. Chu is currently president and CEO of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City. She was nominated by President Obama on February 12 and will formally begin her service as NEA Chairman in the next few weeks.

“I congratulate Dr. Chu on her confirmation to lead the NEA, and I thank the U.S. Senate for voting to approve her nomination,” said Alliance President Ford W. Bell. “I know she will be a tremendous asset to the NEA because she instinctively understands the economic impact of the arts in our communities, recognizes the value of arts education and aspires to bring great art to all Americans. We also owe a great debt to Joan Shigekawa, who ably served as Acting Director for the past year and a half. She and the other dedicated staff members deserve much credit for leading the agency during this transition time.”
Dr. Bell added, “The U.S. Senate took an important step today in supporting our nation’s vibrant arts sector. We also call on the U.S. Senate to confirm William “Bro” Adams to lead the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Adams was nominated by President Obama on April 10 and will be an exceptional leader at the NEH.”
