Advocacy Alert: April 7

Urge the U.S. Senate to Confirm Nominee to Lead IMLS

On March 10, President Obama announced Dr. Kathryn “Kit” Matthew as his choice to serve as director of the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

Dr. Matthew must now be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

Will you take two minutes to ask your Senators to confirm Dr. Kathryn Matthew as the next IMLS director?

"Kit Matthew has a long and distinguished career helping a wide variety of museums achieve success in community engagement, communications and financial stability,” said Alliance President Ford W. Bell. “Dr. Matthew has also worked as a Museums Assessment Program peer reviewer. Her solid museum experience—combined with her work with foundations and in the private sector—makes her an excellent choice to lead this vital agency that supports museums of all types,” said Bell.

Most recently with the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Kit has also served the Historic Charleston Foundation, Please Touch Museum, Science City at Union Station, New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, Virginia Museum of Natural History and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.

Please urge your Senators to confirm Dr. Matthew swiftly so she can get right to work in support of our nation’s museums and their vital role as educational providers and stewards of our nation’s heritage.

Since the January 2015 departure of Director Susan Hildreth, IMLS has been ably led by Acting Director Maura Marx, Deputy Director for Library Services. The IMLS authorizing statute calls for the director of IMLS to alternate between an individual with expertise in libraries and an individual with expertise in museums. Former director Susan Hildreth was a public librarian for many years, and thus Dr. Kit Matthew was nominated as a museum professional.
