Advocacy Alert: March 25

Record Support in Congress for Museum Funding

Representatives and Senators hear from advocates for nearly every program in the federal budget at this time of year. As you can imagine, the halls of Congress get pretty crowded. But somehow, museum advocates have risen above the rest and once again set a new record for congressional support. This year, a remarkable 160 Representatives and 33 Senators signed on to letters calling for robust funding for the Office of Museum Services (OMS) at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

The record result was only possible because of Museums Advocacy Day, when museum supporters from around the country made this request in 368 congressional offices across all 50 states. Advocates continued to make the case online, responding to Alliance advocacy alerts with more than 1,000 emails and calls to their legislators. Thank you to everyone who took action!
“These letters are a key measure of support in Congress, and it’s clear that our message about museums is getting through,” said Alliance President and CEO Laura L. Lott. “If your legislators signed on in support of the cause, I hope you’ll take one minute to thank them. I especially want to thank to our champions in Congress on this issue: Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Representatives Paul Tonko, Leonard Lance, Louise Slaughter, and David McKinley. They’ve shown real leadership on behalf of the museums they represent and those nationwide.”
