Standing Professional Committees (SPCs)

The American Association of Museums' 13 Standing Professional Committees represent specific disciplines within the museum community. Descriptions of the committees follow.

Committee for Diversity in Museums (DivCom)

Represents, recognizes, and embraces the diverse constituencies that member museums serve or seek to serve and ensures representation and leadership throughout the museum profession.

The committee advances this mission through representation within the programs and governance of AAM by providing educational programming, products and publications, leadership initiatives, and fellowships.

Committee on Audience Research and Evaluation (CARE)

The Committee on Audience Research and Evaluation (CARE) provides a national forum for museum professionals dedicated to understanding, promoting and representing the voice of the visitor in all aspects of museum planning and operations. CARE disseminates information about systematic research and evaluation about all museum publics, whether they attend museums or not, through professional development programs at regional and national museum meetings and through publications. The Committee publishes a directory of evaluators every two years, AAM conference proceedings each year and, beginning in 2006, hosts a website to provide the field with basic resources and current theory and methodology. Members benefit from discounts on publications, early notice of programs, and a members-only section of the website.

Committee on Museum Professional Training (COMPT)

The Committee on Museum Professional Training serves as a forum for the discussion, study, and dissemination of knowledge on professional training and opportunities/options, provides direction to all museum professionals seeking enrichment, and develops and advocates training standards and ethics.

Committee on Education (EdCom)

The Committee on Education brings together museum educators and other museum professionals to advance the purpose of museums as places of lifelong learning, to serve as an advocate for diverse audiences and educators, and to promote professional standards and excellence in the practice of museum education.

The Curators' Committee (CurCom)

The Curators' Committee serves curators of different disciplines in the essential fields of collections research, care, and exhibition, and participates in the American Association of Museums Annual Meeting program sessions that involve museum collection, acquisition, preservation and interpretation.

Development and Membership Committee (DAM)

The DAM Committee advances best practices in development and membership for all types of museums, gardens, historic homes, zoos, and aquariums. DAM provides its members valuable benefits such as professional development, networking opportunities, e-newsletters, access to colleagues across the country, and activities at the Annual Meeting. High quality sessions are organized and sponsored at the Annual Meeting, providing professional development tailored to the museum field.

Media and Technology Committee

The Media and Technology Committee (M&T) is the American Association of Museum’s link between museums and media technologies. As such, it identifies, examines, and advocates appropriate uses of media technologies in helping museums meet the needs of their diverse publics.

Museum Association Security Committee (MASC)

Provides its members with information relating to security, fire, health, and safety issues in museums and advocates the role of security professionals.

Museum Management Committee (MMC)

The purpose of the Museum Management Committee is to promote and support the role of management and the responsibilities of managers within museums. In particular, it seeks to increase awareness of the role of administrative, financial, and human resource professionals. The Committee provides a forum where professional peers can identify common concerns and share expertise. As a Standing Professional Committee of the American Association of Museums (AAM), it also acts as a clearinghouse of ideas, professional development and communications among its members and between all museum professionals.

National Association for Museum Exhibition (NAME)

The National Association for Museum Exhibition enhances the cultural landscape by advancing the value and relevance of exhibitions through dialogue among individuals, museum leaders and the public. NAME promotes excellence and best practices; identifies trends and recent innovations; provides access to resources; promotes professional development; and cultivates leadership.

P.R. and Marketing Committee (PRAM)

The Public Relations and Marketing (PRAM) Committee provides professional training, mentoring, and networking opportunities to museum public relations, communications, and marketing professionals. PRAM supports members through a number of benefits, including a valuable list-serve discussion group, a biannual national seminar, regional workshops, networking events at AAMs annual conference, and fellowship opportunities for the annual conference. The PRAM web site (www.pram-aam.org), currently under construction, is a valuable resource that will be updated regularly with the latest on professional development opportunities, calls for proposals, hot topics, and more.

Registrars Committee (RC-AAM)

The mission of the Registrars' Committee (RC-AAM) is “to give assistance to the AMM and its regional associations in their objectives of sound professional preparation and promotion of high standards and, specifically, shall endeavor to increase professionalism among museum registrars through educational programs and publications, establish standards of professional practice, and create an atmosphere of understanding and respect, of communication and cooperation among registrars, between registrars and other museum professionals, and between registrars and individuals in related service fields." - RCAAM 0perating Rules and Procedures, 1978.

Small Museum Administrators' Committee (SMAC)

Advocates for museums with annual budgets under $350,000, raises awareness about the significant role of small museums, and provides access to resources that enhance the quality of small museum operations and services.
