Agenda
Part 1: Director to Director: Challenges of Executive Leadership
Executive directors face unique challenges. There are perennially tough choices, particularly today, and a continuous pressure to be “on” for staff, volunteers and trustees. In this webinar we’ll explore:
- Finding the appropriate balance between organizational transparency and the need for confidentiality, as well as between personal openness and discretion
- Addressing governance matters that impact executive performance, including respect for the boundaries between governance and management; organizing information that supports strategic thinking and good decision making; using meetings effectively; cultivating the necessary trustee talent for the museum’s long-term benefit; and renewing professional and personal satisfaction for the job
Who Should Attend:
This webinar is designed for executive directors primarily and provides a constructive environment for directors to look at issues of critical value to them and to learn and problem with peers.
Part 2: Succession Planning: Moving Past the Imaginary But Always Fatal Bus Accident
Succession planning, which prepares an organization for inevitable changes in leadership, is often a neglected task usually addressed only obliquely or under pressure. In this webinar we’ll explore:
- What the research tells us—the anticipated rate of change over the next few years and the reasons for it
- What succession planning encompasses (and it is not always about the search process), including planned and unplanned absences and departures; interim and short term delegations of authority and responsibility; preparing for a search; and overall capacity building within the management team and the boardRenewing professional and personal satisfaction for the job
- Why succession planning may be avoided as often as it is neglected—the risks as well as the rewards
- Why the board is just as strong a focus for succession planning as the executive director
- Case studies—where has succession planning worked, and what lessons have been learned
Who Should Attend:
Although this webinar is designed principally for executive directors, directors are encouraged to invite trustees to join them.
Part 3: Leadership in the Long Term: Building Leadership Throughout the Museum
Building leadership throughout the museum not only plays a role in good succession planning but also contributes significantly to building organizational capacity and resilience and to strengthening the museum field. Recent research in the museum community and in the broader nonprofit sector identifies the pressing need to cultivate and prepare a new generation of leaders, particularly executive directors. In this webinar, we’ll explore:
- Generational shifts in the workplace
- The higher order skills required to manage nonprofit organizations
- Understanding the range of opportunities within the museum that help create a culture that invests in, inspires and rewards leadership
- Identifying strategies and adopting practices which contribute to leadership development
Who Should Attend:
This web conference is designed to be a team effort involving executive directors, senior managers and younger or newer museum professionals.
