International Partnerships Among Museums
2005 - 2007 Cycle

Phase I Application Instructions for U.S. Museums

June 2004 - March 18, 2005

Please type or print clearly and use only the space provided as applications are photocopied numerous times.

The Phase I Application is considered a marketing tool used to sell a museum to a potential partner. Preparatory materials for Phase I include the Application Overview and the pages in Additional Resource Information.

Section I. Museum Information

Museums supply all information requested in order to assist non-U.S. museums in identifying potential partner institutions.

Section II. Program Information

Museums indicate project areas in which they would like to collaborate with a non-U.S. museum. The museum can list general areas of interest or describe more specific ideas. For example:

  • education: develop programs for children, age 6-10, to coordinate with school curricula
  • exhibition: cooperate on researching and planning a traveling exhibition using material from the permanent collection
  • science: jointly develop an exhibit about air pollution for use at both institutions
  • marketing: develop public programming to increase community interest and promote tourism
  • technology: create digital research resources from the museum's permanent collection

Applicant museums indicate whether they have been in contact and plan to work together with a particular institution on an IPAM proposal.

Museums must be willing to help their partners locate suitable lodging. Paid home stays are desirable for both partners, since the experience enhances the immersion aspect of the exchange. Please note that non-U.S. museums are asked to provide the same service.

Section III. Participant Information

The exchange partner should be a full-time museum professional with at least five years experience in the museum field. Because the program is an institutional linkage program between two museums, it is preferable that the applicant has spent at least one year at their museum. Participants should be at a level within their organization that allows them some decision-making responsibility.

Directors of museums are not eligible to participate in the exchange unless they run a small institution and serve in another capacity, such as curator, simultaneously.

Section IV. Additional Material

Only four pages of application materials will be accepted from each museum. The application form can be no more than two pages to which a one-page museum mission statement and a one-page participant bio are attached. The one-page bio need not be in the form of a résumé or CV. To honor the page limit, participants may choose to include only information relevant to the application. Extra pages are eliminated.

A complete Phase II Application includes:

  • Phase I Application form
  • Museum Mission Statement (one page)
  • Participant Bio (one page)
Phase I Applications for both U.S. and non-U.S. museums must be postmarked by March 18, 2005.

All requested signatures are required. Incomplete applications are not considered.

IPAM staff is available throughout the cycle to answer questions and provide assistance.
