International Partnerships Among Museums
2005 - 2007 Cycle

Phase II Application Instructions for U.S. Museums

April 2005 - October 7, 2005

Please type or print clearly and use only the space provided as applications are photocopied numerous times.

The Phase II Application and project proposal serve as the primary material to be judged by the IPAM Selection Committee. Preparatory materials for Phase II include a book, mailed to U.S. applicants, containing all non-U.S. Museum Phase I Applications, the Application Overview, and the pages in Additional Resource Information.

Section I. Project Proposal

The U.S. partner submits the jointly developed project proposal on behalf of the museum partnership.

Section II. Participant Information

Submit a one-page bio of the staff member who is applying. The bio need not be in the form of a résumé or CV. To honor the page limit, participants may choose to include only information relevant to the application. Extra pages are eliminated.

The exchange partner should be a full-time museum professional with at least five years experience in the museum field. Because the program is an institutional linkage program between two museums, it is preferable that the applicant has spent at least one year at their museum. Participants should be at a level within their organization that allows them some decision-making responsibility.

Directors of museums are not eligible to be exchange partners unless they run a small institution and serve in another capacity, such as curator, simultaneously.

The nominated individual participant must be qualified to conduct the project. If the project idea changes and the nominated participant is not the most suitable candidate, please choose a more suitable candidate. One of the four selection criteria is suitability of candidates to each other and to the proposed project.

Partners identify a provisional date for their exchange. Exchanges can occur at any time between April 2006 and May 2007.

Section III. Museum Information

Museums supply a signed, one-page Museum Director's Statement on institutional letterhead explaining why the museum would like to participate, how the project will further the museum's mission or long-term goals, and what plans are being made to continue the linkage between the museums.

Institutions that have participated in IPAM in the last five years must submit a one-page Previous IPAM Participant Statement explaining how a sustained linkage has been formed with their prior partner institution.

Please include contact information for the museum’s press person or office.

A complete U.S. Phase II Application includes:

  • Phase II Application form
  • Project proposal written in the format specified in the application instructions and submitted by the U.S. partner on behalf of the partnership
  • Participant Bio (one page)
  • Museum Director's Statement (one page)
  • Previous IPAM Participant Statement (one page, when applicable)

Phase II Applications for U.S. and non-U.S. museums must be postmarked by October 7, 2005.

All requested signatures are required. Incomplete applications are not considered.

IPAM staff is available throughout the cycle to answer questions and provide assistance.
