Award Terms


From its inception in 1980, through the end of the 2003-2005 cycle, the IPAM program will have made possible 226 museum exchanges.

World Regions

Eighty four countries in all 6 regions of the world have been represented during the 25-year history of IPAM. The regional breakdown of these exchanges is as follows:

14% - Africa
25% - The Americas
17% - East Asia and the Pacific
38% - Europe and Eurasia
4% - Near East and North Africa
2% - South Asia

U.S. Regions

Thirty nine states in all 6 AAM regions of the United States have been represented in the 25-year history of IPAM. The regional breakdown is as follows:

23% - Mid-Atlantic 10% - New England
20% - Midwest 12% - Southeastern
16% - Mountain-Plains 19% - Western

Museum or Collection Type

Exchanges have also been distributed among museums of different types. The breakdown of the 226 exchanges, according to the type of collection featured in the exchange, is as follows:

3% - Arboretum/Botanical Garden
25% - Art
7% - Children's/Youth
5% - Historic Houses/Sites
11% - History
17% - Natural History/Anthropology
13% - Science/Technology
5% - Zoos/Aquaria
14% - Multidisciplinary and Specialized
