"Over the past 23 years, IPAM has provided the unique opportunity
for America's museums to establish long lasting partnerships and collaborations
with similar institutions around the globe", noted Edward H. Able,
Jr., AAM's President and CEO. "The exchanges facilitated by this
program enrich the participating museums and the communities they serve.
IPAM offers the possibility of a deeper understanding of the traditions
of other countries and fosters respect for cultural differences."
IPAM was founded in 1980 to establish sustainable linkages between U.S.
museums and their non-U.S. counterparts with similar missions through
the execution of a mutually beneficial, collaborative project. With the
completion of this cycle, 226 partnerships have taken place in 39 states
with 84 different countries. The museum selects a staff member to facilitate
the project during a month-long residency at the partner museum.

The IPAM program is administered by the American Association of Museums
(AAM) and funded by the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and
Cultural Affairs (ECA) [and (if applicable) the Trust for Mutual
Understanding (TMU), which supports partnerships between the U.S. and
Central and Eastern Europe. (or if applicable) the Florence Gould
Foundation, which supports partnerships between the U.S. and France.]
