Security

The U.S. Department of State has instituted the following security procedures for its exchange programs. All IPAM participants should familiarize themselves with both this section and with the Travel Tips prior to their departure. It is important that security procedures be followed to ensure a safe and rewarding exchange.

  • Twelve weeks prior to departure, all participants must provide AAM with a completed Personal Data and Emergency Contact Information Form [ PDF Format or Word Format].
  • Twelve weeks prior to departure all participants must also provide a detailed day-by-day Itinerary Form [ PDF Format or Word Format] (as is feasible) for the complete length of their travel abroad. Any significant changes to this itinerary should be reported to IPAM staff immediately.
  • IPAM Staff will alert the nominating embassy/consulate staff of travel dates, and U.S. participants should contact the embassy/consulate in the host country upon arrival in their host country. Non-U.S. participants should check in with IPAM staff upon arrival.
  • The U.S. Department of State, upon approval of travel dates and receipt of participant's Detailed Itinerary [ PDF Format or Word Format] and Personal Data and Emergency Contact Information Form [ PDF Format or Word Format], will register each participant with the Overseas Citizen Services (OCS) section of the nearest embassy or consulate in their host country.
  • Participants should compile a list of addresses and phone numbers to keep with them at all times including those of the IPAM office, the host institution, the host residence, and the embassy or consulate.
  • If an emergency occurs, participants should contact IPAM staff and the embassy or consulate in the host country immediately.
  • Other general information about personal security can be found in the Travel Tips.
