MAP Peer Reviewer Follow-Up to the Site Visit

An important step in the MAP process is to follow up with the museum after it receives the final report. We are currently piloting a more formal follow-up stage in the MAP process and will be using this year as a way to test what works and doesn’t. This follow-up can take a number of forms including:

  • Conference Calls
  • Emails
  • Repeat site visit

The type of follow-up will depend on the needs of the museum, your schedule and the funds available. Regardless of the form of the follow-up, it is an important step to help the museum staff and board understand the report and begin to implement it. You may need to follow up with the museum multiple times after completing the site visit to help assessment team members prioritize their needs and end the program with a “roadmap” in hand to help them achieve their primary goals. Unless you would like to, spend no more than five hours working with the museum in this post-report step.

Please keep MAP staff updated about when and what type of follow-up you will implement. Contact Lauren Silberman, MAP Coordinator, at 202.218.7714 with questions and/or concerns.

Sample Site Visit Follow-Up Schedule

One week to one month after Site Visit

Email or call primary contact to get initial feedback on site visit, check on details and questions needed to complete the assessment report and initiate the follow-up process.

Two to three weeks after museum receives report

Email or call primary contact to give them the opportunity to ask any questions about the report and for you to offer to help them begin implementation.

Three to five months after Site Visit:

Work with staff, governing authority and/or other stakeholders to clarify recommendations, prioritize implementation, lead a meeting to help museum achieve goals (i.e. mission discussion, kick off a strategic planning meeting) or review documents that have been written since the site visit. This can be accomplished many ways including repeat site visits, conference calls and phone/email exchanges. Repeat site visits will need to be discussed with MAP staff and are subject to availability of funds.

Six months after Site Visit

Email or call primary contact to touch base about the progress of implementation of assessment report recommendations.

One year after Site Visit

Email or call primary contact to again touch base about the progress of implementation of assessment report recommendations.
