For Immediate Release
ARLINGTON, VA—Laura Lott, President and CEO of the American Alliance of Museums, issued the following statement today in response to Fiscal Year 2021 budget proposal details released by the White House, which calls for the elimination of multiple agencies that benefit museums, including the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts.
“Today, the White House released details that confirm President Trump’s appalling request to Congress for the fourth time to eliminate key agencies that help museums nationwide serve their communities. These continued threats only reaffirm how critical our ongoing advocacy efforts will be in 2020. President Trump’s misguided proposed cuts have been repeatedly rejected by strong bipartisan support on Capitol Hill. The museum field must continue to work with its allies in Congress on both sides of the aisle to ensure this reckless proposal meets the same fate.
The Alliance remains committed to helping ensure that all legislators understand the profound economic, educational, and community benefits that museums bring their constituents with the help of these vital federal investments. We will bolster the efforts of the thousands of museum advocates participating in Museums Advocacy Day Feb. 24-25, both in-person and online, and provide the field with important advocacy updates and tools in the weeks and months ahead.”
