When it comes to structural racism, museums must be honest about their past mistakes, including how they will address them and what they believe in now. Sites of Conscience members will discuss their museums’ statements in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. The statements speak to the vital role of allyship in advocacy movements and can assist museum leaders in supporting justice. Speakers include Diana Abouali, Director of the Arab American National Museum; Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko, Director of the Illinois State Museum; Chris Newell, Executive Director & Senior Partner to Wabanaki Nations at the Abbe Museum; and Linda Norris, Senior Specialist of Methodology and Practice at the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. This Elevate Stage session took place as part of the 2021 AAM Annual Meeting & MusuemExpo on June 9, 2021.
